Friday Reads Book Club: Big Little Lies

book-club

If this is your first time joining us, we are a weekly book review link up. This is the place for people to go when they are searching for a new book or want to share one that they recently read. I’m collaborating with three other amazing Arizona bloggers: Sarah at Neroli Blossoms and Megan and Joann at  A Whimsicle Life, to bring you a full review of a different book every week.

As a reminder, this “book club” is intended to create a community where we can all share fantastic books that we read and want to recommend to others. Each week, one of the blogger hosts will write a review of an outstanding book. We will also have a linkup each week where fellow bloggers can post book reviews and recommendations.

We encourage you to:

  • Visit the host’s blog, check out each week’s book review, and leave a comment with your thoughts.
  • Post your own book review in our linkup. (Please link back to us on your own post when you do!!

Big Little Lies

By: Liane Moriarty

Imagine a story that involves murder, abuse, and kindergarten? Big Little Lies is told through a series of police interviews, leaving the reader only guessing who was murdered and who was the murderer. The ending is quite shocking, with the least likely killer named. The reader also doesn’t know whether the murder is a justified accident, and something to be celebrated or if it is indeed a tragic turn of events. Check out the FULL review at A Whimsicle Life.

I am SOOO excited to read this book! I will be reading this one over my fall break which is in two weeks!! Let me know if you read it!

Journals

Last week on Monday night I attended an AWESOME night of praise and worship. After listening to the guest speaker and singing worship songs you are able to pick a “lab”/breakout session. There was a room FULL of women worshiping the Lord. It was incredible. I was blessed and got to go with a good friend of mine Amber (When is Nap Time). She is an amazing mother and an even more amazing writer. Please check out her blog if you have children or are just looking for some uplifting words. The lab we decided to choose was a journaling lab. I am not very good at journaling but was interested in it enough to go with my friend. There was an AMAZING speaker and she gave several tips, tricks and ideas to us. For an overview of what we learned check out Ambers Journaling post HERE! I decided instead of giving you a run down of the class I would give you some of my favorite ideas from Pintrest!

Day Twenty-Three: Phoenix Restaurants

Brave Love Blog

Day 23: A guide to your city! Share some of the hot-spots and hidden gems of where you live.

I love my city! I thought instead of sharing maybe hidden gem places I would share about my top favorite restaurants (in honor of restaurant week) in the Valley of the Sun. Check out the list of places to go this week for a great deal on your food in Phoenix!

1) Culinary Dropout- I went to this restaurant for the first time about two years ago. They have an awesome laid back eclectic atmosphere. I love going there and ordering the cheese fondue with pretzel bites, it is one of my favorites. They have GREAT food and if you are ever in the Phoenix area I would highly recommend this place to eat!grocery-new-home

2) La Grande Orange– I love this restaurant they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. I have taken Sister 4 there several times. We like to get a sandwich and salad then share. There is a small shop attached. They also have a large selection of bakery items and a coffee bar. I really have never had anything I have not liked from this place. If you are looking for a more natural lunch I would highly recommend checking out La Grande Orange.

3) The Original Chop Shop– So the story behind this restaurant is that I was out and about in downtown Chandler, AZ and I remember seeing several people that I follow on Instagram posting picture of this place and getting really excited for the new location. Come to find out the new location is in Chandler. I was so excited to have found it randomly I had it for lunch twice that week. I LOVE their bowls. They use very fresh and healthy ingredients in all their meals. I also discovered that they make seasonal flavored lemonade that is to die for. They currently have two locations and I would highly suggest if you’re in the area of either try it out! It is WONDERFUL FOOD!

4) Postino- If you are a wine drinker this is the place for YOU! I went there for a going away party for the first time. I was told to order a good quality wine, which they carry, MANY wines. I was also informed that their food was also good. Especially their bruschetta. So I HAD to try it out. You get to pick a mix of different bruschetta’s to try. They are all amazing and I would have never thought to put the flavors together that they did. If you are looking for a nice relaxing place to enjoy a glass of wine and some tapas I would HIGHLY suggest Postino’s.

5) Joe’s Farm Grill- Last but certainly not least is JOE’S. I LOVE this restaurant. I started a tradition about 2 years ago that every year for my birthday I go here for lunch. I love that half of the seating for the restaurant is outside. Being that my birthday is in the spring the weather is staring to become nice. If you visit Joe’s restaurant on your birthday they will take 10 dollars off of your meal total. They have a farm near-by where they obtain much of their food that they put in the meals. It is a great place to take the family and enjoy the picnic like atmosphere.

Day Twenty-Two: 5 Inspirational Bloggers

Brave Love Blog

Day 22: Introduce us to 5 blogs you read on the regular, and tell us why!

28-150x150.

    1. When is Nap Time?- I frequently check out this blog to see what my good friend and her kiddos are up to. My good friend Amber and I have been learning about blogging together. She says I was her inspiration but I think we both are inspiring each other. I hope one day that I am as good of a mother as she is to her two sweet boys. I am so excited and proud of the work that she is doing and publishing on her blog. If you have young kids check out her blog she is starting a Kids Craft Friday posting.Family-Photos-California-Summer-2014-3
    2. Apples to Ziti– Growing up I had a great friend named Jenna. She then went off to college out of state and got married to the love of her life. She and her husband then started a family and they are now up to three kids. They have such a beautiful family. Jenna decided to start her bolg to cook her way through the alphabet starting with the letter “A” and cooking all the way through letter “z.” Jenna also shares about her loves and what the latest update is on her littles. If you are looking for some great recipes be sure to check out her blog!headshot
    3. Diary of an Addict- I check this blog out at least every other day so excited to see what she will post. I stumbled across this blog before I started up my blog. She has such a sweet family and lives in California. I am so excited and honored to say that I receive mentoring sessions with this amazing lady. I have talked with her twice and have loved my time with her. She is such a sweet and caring woman. I hope one day I will get to meet her at a blogging conference. If you love to cook, know about fitness and family. You will love her blog! Go check it out!BlogBio-01_zps36bd4aab
    4. Sew Caroline– Sew Caroline is another blog that I stumbled upon randomly. I have been following Sew Caroline’s journey for the past year as she has sewn many awesome garments, made her own line of fabric and has published patterns. I love to sew and in reading how she came about learning to sew I have hope and faith that even though I am not the best at sewing that I can make great garments. Be sure to be on the look out for my kimono that I made using Sew Caroline’s awesome pattern. I hope one day I get to meet her at a blogging/crafting conference. July_profile_photo
    5. Gussy Sews-Last but certainly not least Gussy Sews. I LOVE her blog. I feel so inspired after reading her blog. I connected with her instantly through her writing. She is a Midwest girl who got a sewing machine for Christmas and learned to sew through the Internet and self-discovery. She then traveled to Africa (bucket list task for me) with her husband. Once home they found out they were expecting their first along with moving to the west coast. She is now getting ready to have her second baby and is still blogging and maintaining her small sewing business on the side. She is quite the inspiration for me and I would LOVE to meet her in person one day. Be sure to check out her AWESOME blog!

Brave Love Blog

Day 19:If you could give one piece of advice to a large group of people, what would it be?

This is probably the hardest prompt for me this month. I am unsure what kind of advice I would give a large group of people.

……..Relationships take work

……..Find the one you LOVE and hold on to them

…….Be sure to show appreciation to the ones you love around you

Books By: Jen Lancaster

This is the story of what happens when you bring a Prada bag into an unemployment office.

Jen Lancaster had it all – a chic penthouse in Chicago, a six figure salary, closets full of designer clothing and accessories, weekly manicures and pedicures, a great guy, and a snarky wit. But after getting laid off in the post September 11 recession, she suddenly finds herself in a whole new arena. She goes from daily shopping sprees to suddenly not having health insurance and moving into an apartment in the ghetto. From there it gets worse when her boyfriend (who becomes her husband during this time) loses his job, they lose their car, and they almost are evicted from their ghetto apartment and have to move back in with her parents. And yes, there is a point where she actually goes to the unemployment office while carrying a Prada handbag. Needless to say, the encounter does not go well.

Be sure to check out the rest of Sarah’s review by visiting Neroli Blossoms……..These books look AWESOME! I will be reading one!

Day Eighteen: Berlin, Gemany

Brave Love Blog

Day 18: Tell a tale of traveling, a city or country you’ve been to or a favorite vacation.

This is one of my favorite prompts for this blog-tember challenge. When I was in college I decided that I would apply to student teach overseas. When it came time for me to apply I really wanted to go to Italy. I was one of about 10 teachers that were picked to participate in Department of Defense Student teaching program. I traveled to Vilseck, Germany with another student from my college and we lived, traveled and taught for 5 months while we were there. I meet so many amazing people and I traveled to many amazing cities. When I talk to people about my time over there I always tell people to visit ONE city.

BERLINBerlin 068

While student teaching my roommate and I traveled with a teacher to the AWESOME city of Berlin to go to a concert. Once my student teaching was done my mom came to Germany and we traveled for a week. One of the cities I wanted to revisit was BERLIN. I figured my mom would enjoy the city also. There is so much history there and the architecture is so amazing. I love student teaching in Germany! I would recommend that if you ever get to travel to Germany stop by Berlin. I think pictures are awesome and have documented my trip. I will leave you will some picture from my trip to Berlin with my mom.

Day Seventeen: Vlogging

Brave Love Blog

Day 17: Be brave: make a vlog!

I didn’t plan on posting today but after thinking about it I figured I would. I am not posting my vlog today but it will be up before September ends. I figured because I was new to the vlogging world I would ask if you all have some tips or tricks if you have made a vlog. I am looking for any advice so that when I go to make it I feel like I know what I am doing.

Any advice or tips on how to make a vlog?

Day Sixteen: Glass Half Full!

Brave Love Blog

Day 16:”Most people don’t know this but…”

This prompt was hard but easy to write about. I find it hard to open myself up and put my raw emotions and feelings out there but at the same time this was an easy post for me because I want people to know what I have been thought. If you read this post please don’t feel sorry or bad for me. I look at this event in my life as a speed bump and I am on to bigger andbetter things and I hope my Ex is also.

So I did mentioned this a few days ago but I will go into more detail today. Most people don’t know this about me and are usually SHOCKED when I tell my story about my divorce. I met a man while I was at camp after my sophomore year of college and we hit it off. I really liked him so we stayed in contact here and there. A few years later we started talking again on a more regular basis and really liked each other. (Or so I thought). We got married and became a family, he had an AWESOME son from a previous marriage. I loved life. I had a great family and thought God was really on my side. Before our one-year anniversary we decided that we would try to start a family. Near our one-year anniversary I found out we were expecting. We were both very excited. I then started spotting and went to the emergency room. While we were there they checked the baby and I both out and everything looked great. I went home and went about my daily life. At about 11-12 weeks I had an ultrasound scheduled. I went into the doctor’s office and they were unable to find a heart beat. I was crushed! I then had to call my mom because the doctor was asking if I wanted to let it miscarry naturally or if I wanted to have a D&C. I was so uneducated and was very scared of the unknown. I decided to have a D&C and shortly thereafter my husband of one year decided that because we had miscarried that we were just not meant to be. I share my story with other women around me so that if they are faced with the same decision that I was that they can then ask me questions. Since sharing my story I have had two close friends both miscarry and have seeked me out to talk and ask me for advice. God had a plan for my life and me. I am so thankful for the cards that have been dealt into my hand. I love life and I can’t wait to spend it with Mr. Right.
